The Healing Power of Reiki

In therapy, we often talk about healing through words. We explore thoughts, emotions, memories, and the stories we carry about ourselves and our lives. Conversation can be powerful medicine. Being witnessed, understood, and supported can create real change.

But healing does not happen only through language.

Our bodies hold experiences. Our nervous systems carry stress, grief, and trauma in ways that sometimes exist beyond what words can fully explain. Many people sense this intuitively. It may be a feeling of tension in the chest, heaviness in the body, or an emotional weight that feels difficult to articulate.

This is where energy-based practices like Reiki can offer another pathway toward healing.

Understanding Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that supports the body’s natural healing processes by helping balance and move energy through the body.

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:

  • Rei – universal or spiritual wisdom

  • Ki – life force energy

Many healing traditions recognize this same life energy. In Chinese medicine it is called Qi. In yogic traditions, Prana. Across cultures, it is understood as the vital force that animates life.

When this energy flows freely, people often experience greater balance, emotional clarity, and physical ease. When it becomes blocked or depleted, we may feel stress, fatigue, emotional overwhelm, or disconnection.

Reiki works gently to restore this natural flow.

During a session, clients often report deep relaxation, warmth, emotional release, or a quiet sense of clarity.

The Shamballa Reiki Tradition

Shamballa Reiki is a heart-centered form of energy healing that integrates traditional Reiki with a broader spiritual philosophy rooted in compassion, unity, and higher awareness.

The word Shamballa refers to a symbolic place of peace and spiritual wisdom. A reminder of the deeper connection between all living things.

While traditional Reiki focuses on channeling healing energy, Shamballa Reiki also emphasizes awakening the heart and supporting spiritual growth alongside physical and emotional healing.

It works across multiple levels:

  • The body – encouraging relaxation and balance

  • The mind – calming anxiety and mental tension

  • The spirit – fostering connection, meaning, and inner peace

Reiki for Stress, Anxiety, and Emotional Healing

Reiki as a Complement to Talk Therapy

In my work as a therapist, I believe healing can happen through many channels.

Talk therapy helps us understand our experiences, shift patterns, and process emotions. It brings awareness to what is happening within us.

Energy healing works differently.

Reiki supports the body’s relaxation response, allowing the nervous system to move out of stress mode and into a state where healing becomes possible. When the body feels safe, insight often comes more naturally.

Many people find that combining therapy with energy work can:

  • deepen emotional processing

  • reduce stress and anxiety

  • increase body awareness

  • support trauma recovery

  • create a sense of inner calm and connection

Rather than replacing therapy, Reiki becomes a quiet partner in the healing process.

A Simple Energy Practice You Can Try at Home

You don’t need formal training to begin connecting with your own energy in a gentle way.

This is a simple practice you can return to anytime.

A Self-Healing Energy Pause

Find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably.

Take a slow breath in through your nose. Let your shoulders soften as you exhale.

Place one hand over your heart and the other over your abdomen.

Close your eyes if that feels comfortable.

Bring your attention to the warmth of your hands resting on your body.

As you breathe, imagine a soft light or warmth beneath your hands. There is no need to visualize perfectly. Simply allow the feeling of presence.

With each breath, silently repeat:

May my body relax. May my mind find ease. May I be supported in my healing.

Stay here for a few minutes.

When you are ready, take one final breath and gently open your eyes.

Even small moments like this can help the nervous system reset.

When the body feels supported, the mind softens. When the mind softens, the spirit has room to breathe again.

And sometimes, that quiet return to balance is exactly where healing begins.
